The film title ‘The Unborn’ is in white faded and airy writing. The film title is also written in bold capital letters so that it is eye-catching and easily visible to the audience, the main image of the girl may suggest that the title could have something to do with her, maybe she could be possessed and something living inside of her. This instantly creates a code of enigma.
The main image on this poster is of the girl. It is set in a bathroom; this is evident by the sink which the female character is leaning on. This is a location which the audience can relate to; this makes the image more personal to the viewers. There is also a paranormal figure in the reflection of the mirror which has been slightly blurred; this is done to create a code of enigma and raise questions of ‘who is it?’ and ‘what will happen to the girl’. This poster employs iconography of a particular type of genre, it suggests more than one genre because of the mirror in this image, it is very stereotypical of a horror/psychological thriller film; it’s a convention of these genres. Mirrors in these genres tend to show paranormal activity or possessions.
The film star in this film is the main actress, Odette Annable. Her name isn’t shown in a big text size as it is hidden in with the credits. The main actress is in the main image and is positioned leaning onto the sink staring at us as an audience in the mirror, we cannot see her facial expression as we can only see half of her face, this comes across to the audience as if there is a different side to her maybe or that she is hiding something and instantly creates a sense of mystery and a code of enigma. Her style of dress is wearing casual clothing, whilst showing a lot of flesh which could create a target audience to persuade younger men between the ages of 18-30 to go watch the film; this is a unique selling point which is aimed at males. Research has shown that a higher percentage of men went to go watch this film; this may have been a contributing factor.
This poster does carry a tag-line, the tag line is ‘Evil will do anything to stay alive’. It is also in white text to stand out and maybe relate to the other white misty text of the main film title ‘The Unborn’. It has also been place near the paranormal figure in the mirror of the bathroom; this shows that there may be a connection with the figure in the reflection.
The credits on this poster are relatively small, the director and producers names are not standing out, this may be because they aren’t that well-known or that they feel they want the focus to be on the image.
There are many different experiences of pleasure being offered to the audiences, the audience feel scared for the main character on the poster. The target audience for this poster appears to be mainly males ages between 18-30, this is evident because of the female being the main character and the lack of clothes she is wearing will attract males to watch it. The film appears to have something that differs from other films, and that is the realism it carries as its set in a bathroom, the audience can relate as sometimes whilst looking in the mirror people get the feeling of somebody watching them.
