Film Poster Analysis - Silent House

This film title ‘Silent House’ suggests different mysterious meanings, as the text is covered in blood with it dripping down from the letters. This makes us wonder whether there are going to be killings in this house. The main image of this poster is of the main character Sophie screaming, but by the looks of it, it looks like a silent scream, this creates a code of enigma and makes us wonder what it is that’s making her scream, is there a killer or something supernatural. This poster employs the iconography of a particular type of genre; it suggests that it’s a horror/thriller. This is evident as there is blood dripping down from the title and the main picture of an innocent looking girl screaming, which is usually stereotypical for a horror/thriller movie.
The film star is Elizabeth Olson; her name is prominent on this poster which is above the title so it is easy for the audience to recognise. Her image fills out this poster, she is positioned what looks like her leaning over, we cannot tell this or her style of dress as the image is partly obscured by shadow. Her facial expression looks as if she is terrified and screaming/ crying for somebody to help her; she looks innocent in this image. This image is very effective as she is silently screaming, which instantly creates a code of enigma for the audience as we start to wonder what she is being quiet about, and why she has to scream silently instead of creaming at the top of her voice. This image also relates to the title of this film ‘Silent House’.
This poster does carry a tag line. This tag line is ‘Experience 88 minutes of real fear captured in real time’. This suggests more than one meaning. It suggests that the film is inspired by a true story and it actually happened, this is a unique selling point which is why they have picked it as their tag-line.
The credits on the poster are underneath the title and are very small; this may be as the producer and director are not particularly well known. The credits help to sell the film with the release date as it says ‘On March 9th The silence will kill you’, this is a unique selling point and grabs the audiences attention as it relates to the title of the film.
There are many different experiences of pleasure being offered to the audiences, the audience feel scared for the main character on the poster. The target audience for this poster appears to be 15-35 and mainly males, this is evident because of the female main character and the blood dripping down the title. The film appears to have something that differs from other films, and that is the realism it carries as it emphasises that this is based on a true story when it quotes ‘Inspired by true events’ which is the films unique selling point.

Film Poster Analysis - Hide and Seek

The film title ‘Hide and Seek’ suggests different meanings, but none towards the psychological thriller/horror section. It suggests a game to take place in this film. The main image to this film raises questions about the film as we can see a characters body halfway through the door, this leaves us a mystery to who it is and what it will do, is makes us believe that there is maybe something supernatural, it creates a code of enigma. This poster employs iconography of a particular type of genre, it suggests just one genre, and it suggests that the film may be a psychological thriller. This is evident due to the lack of blood on screen and the main image showing us something mysterious behind the door.
The film stars are Robert Deniro and Dakota Fanning. This poster doesn’t show the stars, but they are presented through text which is of a relatively large size, this is a unique selling point as these two actors are relatively well-known for acting in other big films. The tag-line for this film is ‘Come out come out whatever you are’ and is of a very large text size which stands out significantly. This suggests a massive twist to your ordinary game of hide and seeks as the stereotypical thing to say is ‘wherever you are’ not ‘whatever you are’. This suggests that there may be something supernatural or someone unknown as the key to this plot, this creates a code of enigma.
The credits on this film poster are very small; this may be because the director or producers are not relatively well known. Although the release date is put into a different colour font to make it stand out more than the people involved in the making of the film.
There are many different experiences of pleasure being offered to the audiences, the audience feel scared because the image on the poster makes it look like it’s your point of view. The target audience for this poster appears to be 16-35 of a mixed gender; this is evident as there are no main characters shown on the poster to attract a specific gender to watch the film.

Film poster Analysis - The Unborn

The film title ‘The Unborn’ is in white faded and airy writing. The film title is also written in bold capital letters so that it is eye-catching and easily visible to the audience, the main image of the girl may suggest that the title could have something to do with her, maybe she could be possessed and something living inside of her. This instantly creates a code of enigma.
The main image on this poster is of the girl. It is set in a bathroom; this is evident by the sink which the female character is leaning on. This is a location which the audience can relate to; this makes the image more personal to the viewers. There is also a paranormal figure in the reflection of the mirror which has been slightly blurred; this is done to create a code of enigma and raise questions of ‘who is it?’ and ‘what will happen to the girl’. This poster employs iconography of a particular type of genre, it suggests more than one genre because of the mirror in this image, it is very stereotypical of a horror/psychological thriller film; it’s a convention of these genres. Mirrors in these genres tend to show paranormal activity or possessions.
The film star in this film is the main actress, Odette Annable. Her name isn’t shown in a big text size as it is hidden in with the credits. The main actress is in the main image and is positioned leaning onto the sink staring at us as an audience in the mirror, we cannot see her facial expression as we can only see half of her face, this comes across to the audience as if there is a different side to her maybe or that she is hiding something and instantly creates a sense of mystery and a code of enigma. Her style of dress is wearing casual clothing, whilst showing a lot of flesh which could create a target audience to persuade younger men between the ages of 18-30 to go watch the film; this is a unique selling point which is aimed at males. Research has shown that a higher percentage of men went to go watch this film; this may have been a contributing factor.
This poster does carry a tag-line, the tag line is ‘Evil will do anything to stay alive’. It is also in white text to stand out and maybe relate to the other white misty text of the main film title ‘The Unborn’. It has also been place near the paranormal figure in the mirror of the bathroom; this shows that there may be a connection with the figure in the reflection.
The credits on this poster are relatively small, the director and producers names are not standing out, this may be because they aren’t that well-known or that they feel they want the focus to be on the image.
There are many different experiences of pleasure being offered to the audiences, the audience feel scared for the main character on the poster. The target audience for this poster appears to be mainly males ages between 18-30, this is evident because of the female being the main character and the lack of clothes she is wearing will attract males to watch it. The film appears to have something that differs from other films, and that is the realism it carries as its set in a bathroom, the audience can relate as sometimes whilst looking in the mirror people get the feeling of somebody watching them.
