Critical Analysis of the Animatic process of my groups Film Trailer

The Wikipedia definition of animatic is 'a simplified mock-up of still images and rough dialogue’. I believe that is using still shots which are all edited together to make a brief trailer which will indicate whether the film trailer will work, almost like a rough draft of the actual film trailer in still images. We create an animatic for a quicker analysis on what will work and what will not. This gives us an option to change our ideas in the early stages of the creation process.

Creating an animatic can take up a fair bit of time, it requires to make a storyboard for the chosen shots which are to be used in the animatic. Before creating the storyboard you will have to consider the limitations which you may have, you may not have the budget to use specific props or outfits. After creating this storyboard, it would be recommended that you make a shooting schedule with your group based around the shots used in your storyboard; this makes it a lot easier when it comes to arranging trips to locations and the characters needed in the group to take specific shots. It’s also important that you arrange to have the following on each of your trips to take the still shots for your animatic:
-          Correct costumes
-          Actors
-          Props
Once been on the trips taking the shots will take less time if you have planned the storyboard thoroughly and realistically whilst considering the location. Once the shots have been taken, it is important to go into the editing suite together as different opinions may be brought into the editing suite, e.g. difference in order and people wanting different effects to be used, addition of sounds etc. If this has been done in a group, then decision-making can become a lot easier as you instantly have each other’s opinions on plans.

As a group we followed the storyboard and kept everything in order. But once we got into the location on many shots as a group we had decided that maybe the camera angle had changed from an eye-level shot to a high angled shot to make someone seem less powerful. We decided to do this as a group as we thought that the shots would look more appealing. We also asked for other people’s opinions outside of the group which we considered as well.

From my experience we have learnt that the story board was a very useful process and that we wouldn’t have had any structure without it as it made us more organised once planning a shooting schedule.

During the editorial stage of the animatic we used the storyboard to organise how the plan would be set out, before we went into the editing suite we roughly estimated how long each shot would last according to actual film trailer examples, therefore the editing became a much quicker process, we did change the timing on several shots as sometimes we believed as a group that shots lasted too long, or they were too short.

Our choice in the inter-titles was to download fonts, we downloaded one called ‘scratch and demons’ to reflect our genre. The colour red was used to represent fear and blood.

The soundtrack which our group used was a mixture of chimes mixed with high piano notes, we used this as we felt that it created tension and fear for the audience and gave it a creepy effect.

I think that the animatic appeals to the target audience through the soundtrack and the age of characters. It appeals because of the features and activities which are taking place, e.g. the event taking place in the summer and people camping, this is something which the audience can relate to. The horror genre is usually stereotyped for males to watch, so we decided to add romance into the story so it appealed to a female audience as well, this created a larger target audience.

I think overall from the changed that we should make s that we shouldn’t give away as much of our storyline to our narrative, we also needed a soundtrack that would create a much tenser atmosphere for the audience, and we need a soundtrack which will create mystery. We also needed to maybe consider putting the movies tagline into the film trailer.

This is a close up of the character Lucy; she has a demented and scary look about her. Her face is covered in water. As a group we made sure that her hair and make-up would make her look distorted so the audience would be clueless at wondering who it was. Because of this we thought it would create a code of enigma of the audience wondering why she was like this.

This is a medium-long shot of both male characters having an argument; these two characters are both around the same age of the target audience.

This shot of two characters holding hands instantly creates the idea of romance and safety, almost as if the male character is taking care of the female character. This will attract more females for the target audience.

This shot is effective as it shows the camera in a point of view shot, so the audience can experience what the character is experiencing.

This shot is of a female character looking isolated in the dark, this can make the audience feel fear for the character. It also makes the audience unaware that they do not know where she is and what she is looking at.

I was a main character in many of the still photos, but even when I was having the photo being taken of me, I would always look at it straight after, and be critical of it and share my ideas with the group on what we could do to improve the photo e.g. different angle or different pose. I did also help out taking still photos once I wasn’t in the photographs. I also contributed to the group by helping in the editing suite, by adding effects and changing the length of the clips. I would always ask my group weather they thought it would be appropriate to make the additions of effects before actually doing them.

Film Poster Analysis - Silent House

This film title ‘Silent House’ suggests different mysterious meanings, as the text is covered in blood with it dripping down from the letters. This makes us wonder whether there are going to be killings in this house. The main image of this poster is of the main character Sophie screaming, but by the looks of it, it looks like a silent scream, this creates a code of enigma and makes us wonder what it is that’s making her scream, is there a killer or something supernatural. This poster employs the iconography of a particular type of genre; it suggests that it’s a horror/thriller. This is evident as there is blood dripping down from the title and the main picture of an innocent looking girl screaming, which is usually stereotypical for a horror/thriller movie.
The film star is Elizabeth Olson; her name is prominent on this poster which is above the title so it is easy for the audience to recognise. Her image fills out this poster, she is positioned what looks like her leaning over, we cannot tell this or her style of dress as the image is partly obscured by shadow. Her facial expression looks as if she is terrified and screaming/ crying for somebody to help her; she looks innocent in this image. This image is very effective as she is silently screaming, which instantly creates a code of enigma for the audience as we start to wonder what she is being quiet about, and why she has to scream silently instead of creaming at the top of her voice. This image also relates to the title of this film ‘Silent House’.
This poster does carry a tag line. This tag line is ‘Experience 88 minutes of real fear captured in real time’. This suggests more than one meaning. It suggests that the film is inspired by a true story and it actually happened, this is a unique selling point which is why they have picked it as their tag-line.
The credits on the poster are underneath the title and are very small; this may be as the producer and director are not particularly well known. The credits help to sell the film with the release date as it says ‘On March 9th The silence will kill you’, this is a unique selling point and grabs the audiences attention as it relates to the title of the film.
There are many different experiences of pleasure being offered to the audiences, the audience feel scared for the main character on the poster. The target audience for this poster appears to be 15-35 and mainly males, this is evident because of the female main character and the blood dripping down the title. The film appears to have something that differs from other films, and that is the realism it carries as it emphasises that this is based on a true story when it quotes ‘Inspired by true events’ which is the films unique selling point.

Film Poster Analysis - Hide and Seek

The film title ‘Hide and Seek’ suggests different meanings, but none towards the psychological thriller/horror section. It suggests a game to take place in this film. The main image to this film raises questions about the film as we can see a characters body halfway through the door, this leaves us a mystery to who it is and what it will do, is makes us believe that there is maybe something supernatural, it creates a code of enigma. This poster employs iconography of a particular type of genre, it suggests just one genre, and it suggests that the film may be a psychological thriller. This is evident due to the lack of blood on screen and the main image showing us something mysterious behind the door.
The film stars are Robert Deniro and Dakota Fanning. This poster doesn’t show the stars, but they are presented through text which is of a relatively large size, this is a unique selling point as these two actors are relatively well-known for acting in other big films. The tag-line for this film is ‘Come out come out whatever you are’ and is of a very large text size which stands out significantly. This suggests a massive twist to your ordinary game of hide and seeks as the stereotypical thing to say is ‘wherever you are’ not ‘whatever you are’. This suggests that there may be something supernatural or someone unknown as the key to this plot, this creates a code of enigma.
The credits on this film poster are very small; this may be because the director or producers are not relatively well known. Although the release date is put into a different colour font to make it stand out more than the people involved in the making of the film.
There are many different experiences of pleasure being offered to the audiences, the audience feel scared because the image on the poster makes it look like it’s your point of view. The target audience for this poster appears to be 16-35 of a mixed gender; this is evident as there are no main characters shown on the poster to attract a specific gender to watch the film.

Film poster Analysis - The Unborn

The film title ‘The Unborn’ is in white faded and airy writing. The film title is also written in bold capital letters so that it is eye-catching and easily visible to the audience, the main image of the girl may suggest that the title could have something to do with her, maybe she could be possessed and something living inside of her. This instantly creates a code of enigma.
The main image on this poster is of the girl. It is set in a bathroom; this is evident by the sink which the female character is leaning on. This is a location which the audience can relate to; this makes the image more personal to the viewers. There is also a paranormal figure in the reflection of the mirror which has been slightly blurred; this is done to create a code of enigma and raise questions of ‘who is it?’ and ‘what will happen to the girl’. This poster employs iconography of a particular type of genre, it suggests more than one genre because of the mirror in this image, it is very stereotypical of a horror/psychological thriller film; it’s a convention of these genres. Mirrors in these genres tend to show paranormal activity or possessions.
The film star in this film is the main actress, Odette Annable. Her name isn’t shown in a big text size as it is hidden in with the credits. The main actress is in the main image and is positioned leaning onto the sink staring at us as an audience in the mirror, we cannot see her facial expression as we can only see half of her face, this comes across to the audience as if there is a different side to her maybe or that she is hiding something and instantly creates a sense of mystery and a code of enigma. Her style of dress is wearing casual clothing, whilst showing a lot of flesh which could create a target audience to persuade younger men between the ages of 18-30 to go watch the film; this is a unique selling point which is aimed at males. Research has shown that a higher percentage of men went to go watch this film; this may have been a contributing factor.
This poster does carry a tag-line, the tag line is ‘Evil will do anything to stay alive’. It is also in white text to stand out and maybe relate to the other white misty text of the main film title ‘The Unborn’. It has also been place near the paranormal figure in the mirror of the bathroom; this shows that there may be a connection with the figure in the reflection.
The credits on this poster are relatively small, the director and producers names are not standing out, this may be because they aren’t that well-known or that they feel they want the focus to be on the image.
There are many different experiences of pleasure being offered to the audiences, the audience feel scared for the main character on the poster. The target audience for this poster appears to be mainly males ages between 18-30, this is evident because of the female being the main character and the lack of clothes she is wearing will attract males to watch it. The film appears to have something that differs from other films, and that is the realism it carries as its set in a bathroom, the audience can relate as sometimes whilst looking in the mirror people get the feeling of somebody watching them.

Script for voice recordings for anamatic

Jack (me)
  • 'I can't believe this is happening to us' (4 seconds)
  • 'You better hope that she's okay' (3 seconds)
Tom
  • 'What do you want from me?' (3 seconds)
Lauren (Lauren)
  • *Loud Scream* (2-3 seconds)
As a group we are going to record these voiceovers via a video recorder,  we will then split the audio and video seperately in the editing suite, as we will only be using the audio in the anamatic.

Undertaking the anamatics

As a group we visited the location we had chosen around 6 times at 3 seperate locations. The three locations were:
  • Lake
  • Woods
  • Classroom

Possible Fonts for Inter-titles

I will show my ideas to my group members, and we will come to a decision on which font we are going to use.
